William Stewart Grove, Jr.

AUGUSTA, GA. William Stewart Grove, Jr., 97, formerly of Atlanta, GA, died Monday morning, November 30, 2020 at Kentwood Extended Care—Augusta. He was the husband of the late Frances Anne (Avent) Grove, his wife of 67 years. Born September 7.1923 in New Freedom, PA, Mr. Grove was the son of William and Mary (Hartenstein) Grove. He was a 1941 graduate of New Freedom High School, and a 1948 graduate of Harvard University. Mr. Grove served as a Lieutenant and navigator in the Army Air Corps in WWII and was a participant in the occupation of Germany. He was fluent in German and was a liaison between the local residents and the U.S. forces post conflict. After the war he was employed in the insurance industry in New York City and York, PA and then moved to Georgia where he worked for the Lockheed Corporation until his retirement. Mr. Grove was a kind and benevolent man and a devout Episcopalian. He played the clarinet and was a great story teller and loved a good joke. He loved life and dearly loved his family. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, William and Mary Grove, and brother, Dr. Glenn P. Grove. Surviving are his daughter, Mary Anne (Mimi) Owen, and husband M. Glenn Owen her husband, Dr. William S. Grove, III and his wife Malissa Grove, all of Augusta GA; grandchildren, Matthew C. Monroe and wife Jennifer Hope of Philadelphia, PA, Caroline M. Boyd and husband Joseph A. Boyd of Monroe, GA; Jamie G. Cressend and husband Gary Cressend, and Laura Grove and wife Jessica King of Augusta, GA; and great grandchildren, James and Jackie Cressend, Michael and Jacob King, and Madoc and Chloe Boyd.
