Sherwood Marshall Reichard

Sherwood Reichard, Regents Professor Emeritus, Radiology, Physiology and Endocrinology Medical College of Georgia. Born in Easton, PA 92 years ago. He received a BA Degree at Lafayette College and a Masters Degree at New York University. He received his Doctorate at New York University in 1955. He published dozens of articles in scientific and medical journals. He wrote or edited 27 books and lectured in most of the States and Countries of Europe and Asia. He was President or Executive Director of the RES Society, Leukocyte Biology Society, Shock Trauma Society, International Cytokine Society, American Society for Photobiology, Genetic Technology Society. He organized over a hundred major Conferences throughout the world. He was on the staff of several institutions including at the Brookhaven National Nuclear Energy Laboratory, Oak Ridge Virginia Lab, New York University, Johns Hopkins University, Florida State University and Medical College of Georgia. He was Director of the Radiation Biology Institute at FSU and he was Chief of the section of radiation injury at MCG. He also played an important role in academic affairs as President of the Faculty Senate and the Faculty Organization. He helped establish the University Research Institute. He was President of the American Association of University Professors of Georgia as well as President of the Georgia Academy of Science. He reviewed and helped edit many scientific articles and was regularly requested to review children’s books, books of nature and of animals for the Institute for Biological Sciences. He received many honors including the Metchnikoff Medal, Outstanding Teaching Award, Outstanding Performance Award, was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was awarded the first Lilienthal Memorial Fellowship of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was also the recipient of the advanced fellowship from the American Heart Association. He was the special delegate to various international agencies such as International Union of Biological and Chemical Societies, International Union of Shock Societies. He was honored by his selection for Regents’ Professorship at MCG. He served as an Officer in the US Army and was on the staff of Brooke Army Hospital, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Walter Reed Hospital. He was Acting Chairman of the Radiation Injury Section at AFIP and studied effects of radiation from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He was Commanding Officer of the CBR (Chemical, Biological and Radiation) Unit. He received an Army Outstanding Performance Award. Dr. Reichard was also a very successful financial advisor and businessman. He was CFO of Chemco, CEO and President of Management Association for Professional Societies, and on the Board of Directors of several corporations. He wrote two books on Tax Sheltered Annuities and served on the International Trade Council during the late 80s and early 90s, as well as the task force to convert NASA technology for commercial utilization. He founded the Health Center Credit Union and was President and CEO of Biomedical Press which published journals, books, newsletters, conference proceedings, etc. He is preceded in death by his parents Ted and Jeannette, his wife Laine, sons Jon and Stuart and brother David. He is survived by his daughter Deborah in Washington State, his daughter-in-law Christy in Florida, his granddaughter Isabella in Colorado, his granddaughter Abby (Jonathan) and 2 great grandchildren, Amelia and JB all in Augusta .
