Ruby Ross

Ruby Mae Ross, 79, of Augusta, Georgia, passed away at her home after a 3 month illness, on Friday, April 20, 2018. She grew up as the youngest of three, in McDuffie County, to her very hard working parents, Edgar and Sally Smith. She married Shelton Hood just out of high school in October 1954 and together they brought into this world five lovely daughters. Shelton, or ‘Red’, as he was known, died in a tragic car accident in 1973. Life would take many twists and turns for Ruby and her family during the years that followed. During those times life was difficult in many ways. Then she met Frank Ross and they married in 1986. He was ‘the love of her life’, and they enjoyed 15 happy years together until his death in 2001. Ruby was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Edward Smith. She is survived by her sister Elizabeth McGahee and brother-n-law John McGahee, and her daughters Cindy Hood Compton, Cathy Hood Greenhill (Arlen), Carol Hood Hilldebrandt (Luer) Carla Hood Major, and Connie Hood DeBruin. She had nine grandchildren. Lou and Rod Whitaker, Jesse Hood, Lee and Glen Major, Wesley and Melyssa Moore, Will and Ben DeBruin. And six great grandchildren Samantha, Abigail, Bryce, Layla, Jazzy, Luke. Ruby was very sad to lose her independence, but very glad that she was taken care of at home by her five daughters till the end. Mama, we will miss all those ‘Skip-Bo’ card games and watching ‘the Wheel’. We all look forward to the resurrection, when life will be what it should be, happy and never ending.
