Augusta, GA. U.S. Army Retired 1SG Richard Williams, Sr., age 74, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Georgia Regents Hospital. He was born June 29, 1940 in Taylor, PA.He is a son of the late Ishmael and Ann (Harris) Williams. He lived in Bethlehem, PA. and joined the U.S. Army in 1960.He married Barbara A. (Del Borrello) July 1961 while stationed at Ft. Dix, N.J. From there, he went to Germany until he entered into the Vietnam War, where he served two tours.In 1970, he was stationed at Ft. Gordon until 1979.When his next duty station called, his family remained here in the Augusta area.He served in New York then was given orders to Ft. Jackson, where he retired as 1SG in 1981. After he retired from the U.S. Army, he became an instructor at Hephzibah High School with their ROTC Program where he remained for 21 years. He was a dedicated Senior Life Member of the DAV, where he served as Chapter Commander of Pendleton King Chapter #10, Augusta, for 7 years and served as State Commander of the DAV, Department of Georgia, for 3 years.He was State Adjutant for 1 year and on the Finance Committee for 7 years.He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #412 of Hephzibah; He was a member of the Retired School Teachers Association.He volunteered at the Georgia War Nursing Home and both VA Hospitals here in Augusta.He was the VAVS Representative and Deputy for 6 years.Richard will always be remembered for his sense of humor, appreciation of history, and most of all, his love for his family. In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by his children, Richard (Lynn) Williams, Jr. of Harker Heights, TX., Peter (Belinda) Williams of McKinney, TX., Sherry (Paul) Mooneyham of Grey, TN., Dona Williams of Augusta and Dora (Nathan) Stuch of Papolino, NE.; grandchildren, Tarin, Twinner, Talis, Savannah, Michael, Austin and Mathew; one great granddaughter, Nene; 2 brothers, Joseph (Michele) Williams of Pamerton, PA., and Wilford Williams of Bethlehem, PA., one sister, Ruth Thomas of Allentown, PA. Visitation will be Friday 6 pm to 8 pm at THE POTEET FUNERAL HOME, 3465 Peach Orchard Rd., HWY 25, Augusta, 30906, 706.798.8886. Funeral services will be Saturday 11 am at the funeral home.Burial to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors.Honorary Pallbearers will be Cadets of the Hephzibah High School JROTC Program.
