Mr. Richard D. Flaherty Retired U.S. Army Martinez, Ga., Richard David Flaherty beloved husband of Frances passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Georgia Regents University Medical Center. A graveside service with military honors will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio Oct. 10, 2014, at 1pm. Mr. Flaherty, a native of Rocky River Ohio was the fourth son of Irish Parents. He retired to the Augusta area over 30 years ago from the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam where part of his service was in communications with MACV. Previous to that he was a Morse Code operator/instructor and taught over 3,000 students. A wonderful artist, poet and author of his own biography, “My 65 years” Richard loved to travel to scenic locations which inspired his paintings. Life events have taken him in many directions, but Richard never lost his love for art. He held dual citizenship with the United States and Ireland. He was Catholic and a member of the American Legion, Post 192 of Evans, and Ga. Richard was the loving father of three daughters, Deborah Flaherty of Berea, OH. Sharon DeTillio (Joseph), Amherst, OH. And Jo Ann Chapman (Mark Fuldauer) of Rocky River OH. Richard was also the father of three stepsons; William, Mark and Robert Diles all of Augusta, Ga., and dear grandfather of six; Andrew, Emily, Katie, Kimberly, Shaun and Maggie.
