Mr. Melton Walden Evans, Ga. Uncle Mel to many, Melton Walden, has gotten his wings back and is now flying the skies of the great blue yonder! He left this world on January 5, 2015, surrounded by family at his home in Evans, GA. He was born on December 30, 1937 to the late Oliver Pilture Walden and Mary Will Smith Walden. His siblings are Andrey Norton, Brenda Hobbs and the late Oliver Walden. Mel also leaves behind his niece/caretaker Jessica Arrington, Matthew Prickett, and her kids Camden, Gracie & Oliana. His nephews and nieces are as follows; Richard Hobbs (Lisa) and kids; Cody, Joshua, Nicholas. The late Mary Frances Norton, Jackie Norton, Lee Long, Donna Pacheco, Cherlyn Templeton, Rita Hobbs and Milton Hobbs, Jr. Some of his noteworthy achievements: In 1967, he enlisted in the Georgia Air National Guard where he trained to be a flight engineer. . Joined Air Force Assoc. Reserve Program at Charleston AFB, S.C. in early 1970’s . While in Charleston he obtained his FAA multiengine commercial and instrument pilot ratings. . In 1978, Mel accepted employment with Saudi Arabia Airlines in Jeddah. He remained with the airline for the next eighteen years. . In 1997, Mel went to work with Polar Air Cargo. He remained until he was forced to abandon his love (Flying) due to Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was a member of First Christian Church of Augusta. Member of South Augusta Exchange Club. . An avid Philanthropist . He retired as an E9 Chief Master Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force and is a Veteran. Mel flew the following aircraft during his 30 years of employment as a pilot: Douglas C-124, Lockheed C-141, Boeing 707, Lockheed L 1011, Boeing 747, Command c 5a. A memorial services will be held at First Christian Church of Augusta at 1:30 pm on Sunday, January 11th. 2015. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to his church.
