Kenneth "Ken" Ray Brewer

August 3, 1947 — June 5, 2023

On a warm summer afternoon, June 5, 2023, Kenneth "Ken" Ray Brewer, 75, hung up his coaching whistle for the final time and took the journey from Southern Breeze Personal Care Home in Evans, Georgia, to the peace of his heavenly home. Born amidst the hustle and bustle of Atlanta on August 3, 1947, to Rachel and JE Brewer, Ken grew up in Austell and graduated in 1965 from South Cobb High School. He lived with his partner, Carol, in Acworth, Georgia, for many years. As his health took a toll in recent weeks, Ken transitioned to Evans, Georgia, where he spent his final days. A young basketball hotshot in high school, Ken's love for the game led him to play basketball at his beloved University of Georgia. He later switched gears to Georgia State University, graduating in 1970. From there, he became Coach Brewer, guiding young athletes on the baseball field at T. DeWitt Taylor High School, Pierson, Florida; the football fields at Northeast Macon High School, Berkmar High School, and Cedar Shoals High School; and football and basketball at Wheeler High School. Ken's adoration for sports didn't end at the court or the field. He also held an enduring romance with golf, spending endless hours mastering the greens with his friends. Though time and poor health ended his playing days, Ken could still be found with his eyes glued to the TV, living every moment of his favorite sports. He was a Brewer through and through, possessing the innate family gift for spinning stories. His captivating tales from his coaching years and family escapades left everyone in stitches, and even as his health took a downturn, he left a trail of smiles wherever he went. Ken is survived by his son, Chris Walsh; his partner of many years, Carol Christison; his sister, Joanne (Charles, d.) Brewer Yates; his brother, David (Rebecca) Brewer; his brother-in-law, Dale (Carole, d.); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His memory is also held dear by Chris's mother, Elaine Skerrett Cammarosano; and Ken's former wife, Deedra M. Brewer. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Stephanie Land; his mother, Rachel Brewer; father, Joseph Brewer; and sister, Carole (Dale) Sims. In the spirit of Ken's love for sports, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to your nearby high school sports program.
