Retired SFC John “Friggs” Clarence McCants, Sr., 81, of Asheville, passed away on November 23, 2015 at his residence in Augusta, Georgia.Mr. McCants was born in Asheville, North Carolina to Charlie and Ellen McCants on November 11, 1934.He entered into holy matrimony on July 30, 1958 to Betty Ruff McCants, and to this union five children were born. He enlisted in the United States Armed Forces at the age of 17 and diligently served his country in the Korean War and Vietnam War.He retired from the military after serving 26 years of honorable service with multiple military honors, including Vietnam Service Medal (2 Campaigns); Vietnam Campaign Medal; 2 O/S Bars; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; National Defense Service Medical (1st OLC); Joint Service Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service as NCOIC, Joint Task Force Communications Center; Good Conduct Medal (6th Award); and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.He continued his service to the Federal Government as a civil servant and retired as a Signal School Instructor after 15 years of service. John’s favorite pastime was golfing, especially in Myrtle Beach where he won a myriad of tournaments during and after his retirement from the U.S. Armed Forces.He was a member of the Retired Military Golf Association and former member of the Master City Golf Association. John is survived by his wife Betty of 57 years; son John “Sneezy” ; daughters Gesna, Sharon, Betty Jean, Ruth and Sheila; seven grandchildren Shalyse, Phillip, Ashley, John, Eric (Latricia), Joya, and Spencer; and one great-grand-son Eliyah McCants; two brothers Robert McCants (Asheville, NC) and Raymond (Linda) McCants (Brevard, NC) and a host nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends Memorial Service will be held at Poteet Funeral Homes on Peach Orchard Road on Monday, November 30, 2015 at 11:00 am with Archbishop Abia Williams officiating.Poteet Funeral Homes is handling memorial arrangements.
