Mr. James Earl Turner, 83, of Hephzibah, GA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving family Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 4, at 12:00 pm in the Poteet Funeral Home Chapel, 3465 Peach Orchard Rd, Augusta, GA. 30906.Graveside services will take place on Thursday, December 4, at 2:30 in Hebron Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Garfield, GA. Born in Garfield, he was the son of the late Iva J. and Ila Mae Daniels Turner. James graduated from Garfield High School as Valedictorian and was awarded a four year scholarship to Georgia Tech. He was called to duty with the Korean War before he attended college. He served 3 combat tours in the hostile waters of Korea in the US Navy aboard the USS Los Angeles. While on shore leave in his homeport of Long Beach, CA he met his wife Mary Harris Turner. James attended University of Georgia for two years and Augusta Tech for two years graduating with a degree in electronics. He was hired with Continental Can\Federal Paperboard at startup as an instrument mechanic. During his 36 years of service he worked up the ranks to instrument foreman and retired as plant engineer. James is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Mary Harris Turner, sons, David (Marie) Turner, Donald (Sheri) Turner, daughters, Debra (David) Usry, Denise Turner; brother, John W. Turner; sister, Charlene Oglesby; grandchildren, Shanna (Joshua) LaFontaine, Lauren Usry, Austin Turner, Allison Turner, Christopher Turner, Summer Turner and Amber Turner;great grandchildren, Brett LaFontaine, Cole LaFontaine, and numerous nieces and nephews.His faithful dog, Katie, who James loved to spoil. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 5 pm to 7 pm.
