James Wilbur McCorkle, 82, of Augusta, GA went to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 27, 2023 following a brief illness. James was born on April 14, 1941, the first of four sons born to Chesley and Lillian McCorkle. He was a butcher and trained many others to do this as well, first at Food Land in Harlem and later with BI-LO, where he retired in 2003, after more than 30 years with the company. He was a faithful member of the Masters Worship Center, where he was a member of the church board and former Sunday School teacher. Always ready with a story and an amazing recall of details, James had the gift of gab. He gave of himself freely, never expecting anything in return. From cars to lawnmowers and everything in between, he relished the challenge of repairing and repurposing things so they could be of use to others. James didn’t sit still for long; he was always busy doing something and in his later years, found special joy in the time spent with his youngest grandchildren. With his sparkling blue eyes, friendly smile and outgoing nature, James never met a stranger. His daily walks around the neighborhood, sporting Scripture-based baseball caps, t-shirts (with suspenders) and his hand- carved walking stick, gave him many opportunities to witness his faith, which he felt was his calling. He did this with humility and without judgement and lived his life with an attitude of gratitude. The world will be a little quieter without him. James was predeceased by his parents, a brother Wayne McCorkle, infant daughter Christy Marie McCorkle and son Kenny McCorkle. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Chris McCorkle, and children Angie Byrd (David), Mike McCorkle, Joe McCorkle, Andrew Whipple (Angela), Jeremy Whipple (Ashley), Stephen McCorkle (Monica), Elizabeth McCorkle (Jackson), two brothers, G.C. McCorkle and Warren McCorkle, as well as fifteen grandchildren (plus one on the way) and two great grandchildren. A celebration of James’ life and legacy will be led by Pastor Tracy Bridgers at the Masters Worship Center, 3710 King Street in Martinez on Wednesday, May 31 st at 2p. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Masters Worship Center. Until we meet again.
