Mr. James L. Smith US Army Retired Mr. James L. Smith of Augusta died on Monday, February 28, 2011.He was 85 years old. The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, March 2, from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at The Poteet Funeral Home, 3465 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta.The funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.Committal services, with military honors, will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.Rev. Marion Jay will officiate. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Conner Smith; his daughters, Cathy Jayne Martin, and her husband, Terry, of Greenville, South Carolina, and Julie Elizabeth Todd, and her husband, Tony, of Jackson, South Carolina; his grandchildren, Kevin Todd, Michelle Bodkin (Matthew), Jessica Holsonback, and Melissa Martin; his great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Bodkin.He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vicki Ann Holsonback, in 2004; his parents, Monte D. and Mattie Thompson Smith; his brother, Douglas Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church.He retired from the United States Army as First Sergeant, with 26 years of service.He served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War.He was very fond of the family dog, Max.
