James Riley Butler died peacefully August 14, 2022, at age 84 after an extended illness. Jim was born in Latta, SC to Jack and Belle Butler. Jim grew up in Marion, SC and entered the US Army in 1956 spending time in Panama, Vietnam and in Hohenfels and Frankfurt Germany where he met his wife, Georgine. Jim’s service was a total of 42 years Army and Civil Service combined. Jim was a member of VFW Post 649, American Legion Post 178, and a member of Fleming Lodge 718. Jim is survived by his wife Georgine Butler, his daughters Diana Wood and Barbara Poling and his son Robert Butler; grandsons Jake (Heather) Wood and Travis (Grace) Wood and his great grandchildren Brantley Claire Wood and Lucas Riley Wood. Jim is also survived by his brothers Bill (Terrie) Butler and Michael (Joann) Butler. Jim is also survived by his sister-in-law Renata Janowitz and family. Jim is also survived by his nephews Brett (JeanAnn) and their son Bryson and Jay (Rachel) Butler and niece Tracy and her daughter Charlee and great niece Cher (Jack) Wertz. Jim is also survived by MaryAnn Williams, Lamont Smith and sons Santiago and Sebastian, Timothy (Susie) Putnam and family, Veronica (Mike) Laird and family and Yvonne (David) Partain and family. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother F. Jay Butler and his beloved sons-in-law Joe Wood and Ralph Poling. Jim was known as Pops to his friends and Papa to his family. Jim will be missed by all who knew him. Memorial service will be held at VFW Post 649,
2430 Windsor Spring Road, with military honors at 1 pm August 27, 2022. Interment will be at Hillcrest cemetery in the veteran mausoleum.
