Helen A. Brown Hawn Helen was born on March 8, 1928 in Shelby, Iowa, and was the youngest of 4 children. Her parents were P. L. (Porter Lafayette) and Elva Brown; she had two brothers, Paul and Lawrence and one sister, Dorothy; they all preceded Helen in death. Helen’s husband of 57 years (Wayne) also preceded her in death having died in 2005, 10 years to the day of the date on which Helen will be buried (January 3rd). Helen was also preceded in death by a granddaughter and great granddaughter, Karen Hawn and Brandy Habercorn. Helen attended the Shelby school system for 12 years, graduating high school in 1946. After 1 year of nurses training, she worked for a local doctor for 14 months until she married Wayne Hawn in 1948. Wayne was in the military and they lived in 6 states, as well as the Panama Canal Zone and Germany during his 20 year military service. She had 6 children: Walter Hawn (Susan), Christina Armour (David), Norene Flick (Denny), Patricia Strayer (Charles), William Hawn, Sr. and Susan Stewart (Richard). Wayne’s final military assignment was at Fort Gordon and the family lived in Martinez, Georgia. He retired from the military in 1968 but they continued to move every few years having lived in Washington, Lincolnton and Crawfordville until they finally settled in Augusta in 1995. When the family lived in Washington, Helen began to work at Belk Department Store as a sales clerk, department manager and buyer representative for some 20 years when she retired to attend to Wayne in his final years. Helen was a very active member of Cokesbury UMC until health kept her homebound for the last 2 years of her life, but she continued as a faithful member batheing them in prayer and paying her tithes faithfully. Pallbearers will be her sons-in-law and grandsons: David Armour, Denny Flick, Charlie Strayer, Richard Stewart, Eric Hawn, Walter Richard Hawn, Benjamin Dykes, Mark Perkins, Kevin Hill, Eddie Flick, Adam Strayer, Cliff Strayer, William Hawn, Jr., Dylon Edwards, Dustin Herfurth and Abe Stewart. Following in Helen's footsteps are her granddaughters: Mandy Hawn (Eric), Sharon Hawn, Theresa Dykes, Amanda Perkins, Patty Flick-Hill, Anna Hughes, Shelly Reed, Michelle Strayer (Adam), Nina Strayer (Cliff) and Sarah Herfurth. Helen's great-grandchildren: Michael Smith, Cheyenne Burnett, Gavin Armour, Luciana Hill, Enzo Hill, Kristi Rose, Emily Strayer, Alli Strayer, Courtney Reed and Cade Reed. Helen's great-great grandchild is Ashton Valero. Helen’s funeral service will be conducted at Bellevue Memorial Gardens on Saturday, January 3rd at 2 pm; internment will follow. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 1 pm. Officiating will be Sandy Heslop, Adam Strayer and Belinda McElroy (at graveside). Whispering Hope solo to be sung by Patty Flick-Hill. A reception will be held following internment at The Vineyard (3126 Parrish Road), food provided by Cokesbury UMC and Souls Harvest Church of God. Memorials may be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
