Hephzibah, GA. George Alton Lackey, age 81, of Hephzibah, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2015. He was born July 15, 1934 in Whitmire, S.C., to the late John Avery and Levenia Abrams Lackey.George grew up in an orphanage in Macon, GA, with his 3 brothers. He was a graduate of Woodruff High School in South Carolina in 1954, He retired from the U.S. Army in 1987.While in the Army, he served two tours in Vietnam.He earned two college degrees in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, FL., and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Hawaii Pacific College in Honolulu, HI.George was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was also a Shriner. He is survived by his wife Vera (Sprouse) Lackey; 1 daughter, Nancy (Tony) Price; 4 grandchildren, George Anthony Price, Steven Kyle Price, Amaris Lara Price, Joshua Brown and Darold Brown; 3 great grandchildren, Candice Brown, Henley Oliva Price and Sheila Nicole Brown; 1 brother, Vernon Lackey.He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Jean Brown and 1 great grandchild, Jeremiah Brown. Family will receive friends Wednesday 6 pm to 8 pm at THE POTEET FUNERAL HOME, 3465 Peach Orchard Rd., HWY 25, Augusta, 30906. Services will be Thursday, 10 am at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Robertson, officiating.Full Military honors will be rendered following the services at the funeral home.Burial will be in Milledgeville Veterans Cemetery in Milledgeville, GA.
