Evangeline Gerstenberg

November 1, 1939 — March 17, 2025

Evangeline (Toni) Gerstenberg passed away peacefully on Monday, March 17, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. She was born on November 1, 1939, to George and Mabel Alpers. Toni had an unwavering passion for teaching and dedicated 36 years of her life to educating students at Sachem Central School District. She continued to share stories of her experiences in the classroom up until her final months, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. In retirement Toni found joy in volunteering for the commission of the Aiken County Historical Museum. Serving on the commission and as a docent. An exceptional cook and gracious hostess, Toni found joy in entertaining friends and family. She also enjoyed listening to her husband Robert play the piano. Above all, her greatest love was her family, especially her beloved husband, Robert. Toni's devotion to her children and grandchildren knew no bounds—she would do anything to ensure their happiness and well-being. A strong-willed and independent woman, Toni's selflessness was evident in the countless late nights and early mornings spent caring for her family, ensuring that their needs were always met. Toni leaves behind her devoted partner and soulmate of 60 years, Robert, who was not only her life partner but also her steadfast friend and caregiver in her final year. She is also survived by her two daughters, Mari Ukleya and Christina (Ryan) Schroeder; her grandchildren, Owen Ukleya, Logan Ukleya, Addison Schroeder, and Cayden Schroeder; her brother, Gordon (Ester) Alpers; her sister, Marianna Alpers; her brother-in-law, John (Bridgette) Gerstenberg; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. At this time, no formal services will be held. A memorial celebration of Toni's life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Toni's memory to the Gentiva Hospice 5250 Woodside Executive Ct. Aiken, SC 29803 or the Alzheimer's Association.
