Life Legacy AUGUSTA, GA—Dorothy Ann Carwile “Dot” Woodhurst, beloved wife of Robert Stanford “Stan” Woodhurst Jr., 87 passed away in Augusta, GA on Wednesday November 23, 2011.She died peacefully in her sleep at Kentwood Nursing home. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. C. Gregory Deloach III officiating.The family will receive friends in the Rotunda of the First Baptist Church immediately following the service. Born in De La Howe, SC, Dot was the daughter of Alice Callaham Carwile and Addison Brooks Carwile, a former South Carolina State Senator.She is survived by her husband, Stan Woodhurst,one son Robert Stanford Woodhurst III and his wife Catherine Doris Woodhurst of Augusta.She is also survived by five grandchildren; Robert Stanford Woodhurst IV, William Gary Woodhurst, Alice Carwile Woodhurst, Catherine Brooks Woodhurst, and Leila Hammond Woodhurst. Dot graduated from Abbeville (SC) High School and from Furman University in 1944 with a BA in Music.She worked at the Del Rio, TX Air Base and then with the Army Engineers in Atlanta while Stan served as a pilot in World War II and while he was MIA/POW.After being reunited in 1945, they wed and lived briefly in Spartanburg, SC, before moving to Augusta in 1947. In the ‘50s, she was a local Augusta TV personality known as “Miss Dorothy” for Romper Room School. She also taught kindergarten and music inthe Richmond County School System for 30 years. An active member of the First Baptist Church since 1947, she served as the Children’s Choir Director and Junior Department Sunday School Superintendant; Dot chaired the Historic Committee in addition to playing the piano for her Sunday School department for over 20 years.She was a member of the Circle, Clara Wade Mission Group and Thankful Sunday School Class. Active in the community, Dot served as president of the Opera Guild and president of the Symphony Guild.She was chairwoman of the Augusta Symphony Cotillion and was a tour guide for Historic Augusta.She was president of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women and active in many fundraising activities for the AAUW and Furman University.Dot was known for her style and was a fashion model for many fund raisers.An active Furman alum, she served on the Furman Alumni Board and as president of the Augusta Furman Club.Dot was a member of the Azalea Garden Club and the Augusta Junior Woman’s Club. Dot Woodhurst was a stylish, sophisticated bon vivant.A talented musician and a gracious hostess, she was known for her modern house, great recipes, generous heart and a kind word for everyone.Her life was characterized with a joie de vivre that included “as much social life as I could get in” between the church and civic activities.She loved people, travelling, reunions, Christmas carols, entertaining, dogwoods, French wine and especially her friends, family and her grandchildren.
